As an agent in our Holderness and Plymouth offices, part of the allure of living here in the Lakes Region is the ability to recreate where we live! One of the favorite activities for our family is our boating days on Squam Lakes. For years, we've enjoyed our evening boat rides, so I thought I'd give you an inside peek of some of our favorite places you can explore when boating on Squam!
For us, our boating days on Big Squam Lake usually begin around 4:00 PM when it is far easier to find a place to park in the busy village center of Holderness, NH. The town center is surrounded by Squam Boat Livery (where many boat owners purchase gas and boat necessities) and the very popular Walters Basin Restaurant with its newly added Beach Bar. Bisecting the town is the canal that joins Little Squam and Big Squam Lakes. Because of the popularity of these businesses, we typically park at the Badger Peabody & Smith office in the middle of all this activity (a perk of being an agent in this office!).
Our favorite ride is one in which we can swim and relax – for us, we've found that Sturtevant Cove is great. This is where we've found there are more loons because it is quiet and there is less activity. When the sun is starting its downward movement towards the mountains of Squam Range, we begin our journey west to Bennett Cove and Veerie Cove directly below Rattlesnake Mountain and adjacent to Rockywold Deephaven Camps. Before the sun sets completely, we jump into the cool dark waters of the cove one last time.
At this point, we are headed back and the sun is setting. We get the lights on the boat turned on and head south, back to the canal and past many large and small islands - Sheep Island, Church Island, and the really small islands that many unknowing boaters have had the bad luck of hitting, Perch and Potato Island. When the natural light show of the evening comes on between the setting sun, clouds and the lit up cottages and buoys, we tie up the boat as we've completed another beautiful evening on Big Squam.

For over forty years, I've been a resident of the Lakes and Mountains Regions of New Hampshire after growing up in Keene. I received my real estate license after turning a lifelong love of real estate into a full-time job following my retirement from teaching in 2008. I live between Lake Winona and Lake Winnipesaukee in the middle of the lakes. When I have free time, I can be found with my Chocolate Lab, Eddie, on the hiking trails that surround Squam Lake and the peaks of Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough.
