Peaceful Spring Hikes Around the Mount Washington Valley | Badger Peabody & Smith RealtyThe White Mountains are among New Hampshire's most beloved natural treasures, drawing hikers from across the Northeast with their rugged peaks, scenic valleys, and miles of well-maintained trails. Anchored by the towering presence of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 feet, this region offers everything from challenging summit climbs to peaceful woodland walks. Our real estate agents are here to share a few favorite spring hikes in the White Mountains that showcase the area's beauty without requiring an all-day trek.

Easy Spring Hikes in the White Mountains

Mt. Washington is known for its wildly erratic weather and for the grueling ascent to its rocky summit, but many hikes in the surrounding valleys are much more tranquil. About an hour and a half or less from these Plymouth homes for sale, the Mt. Washington Valley is a prime day trip for hikers looking for a less strenuous spring outing.

Black Cap Trail - Conway, NH

Address: Hurricane Mountain Road, Conway, NH 03860

Tucked behind Cranmore Mountain, the Black Cap Trail offers expansive views of the Mt. Washington Valley. Starting in Conway Common Lands State Forest, this 2.3-mile out-and-back trail is a moderate hike with easy-to-follow red blazes that lead through dense woodlands toward the 2,369-foot summit of Black Cap Mountain. Convenient to numerous Conway homes for sale, the trail offers incredible views with minimal effort, making it one of the most popular hikes in the White Mountains.

Thompson Falls Trail - Gorham, NH

Address: 542 NH-16, Gorham, NH 03581

Located a stone's throw from these Gorham homes for sale, the quick and easy Thompson Falls Trail begins near the Wildcat Mountain Ski Area on Route 16. Traversing the lush landscape of Pinkham Notch, the trail offers access to a series of lovely cascades along Thompson Brook. With the stream full of spring runoff, this is a great time of year to hike this 1.2-mile round-trip trail (but expect some muddy conditions).

Mountain Pond Loop - Glen, NH

Address: Town Hall Road, Glen, NH 03838

A charming loop hike within White Mountain National Forest, the Mountain Pond Loop follows a 2.6-mile circuit around the picturesque shoreline of Mountain Pond. The pond itself is as popular among anglers as hikers, thanks to its populations of brook trout and rainbow smelt, so consider packing a fly rod on your spring hike. It's an easy route with minimal elevation gain and can be completed in an hour. The Mountain Pond Loop also includes one of the few remaining wooden lean-to shelters in the national forest.

Albany Town Forest - Albany, NH

Address: NH-112, Albany, NH 03818

About an hour south of Mt. Washington, Albany Town Forest in the town of Albany offers a serene woodland crisscrossed by about 5 miles of easy hiking trails. The trails form a series of loops on the south side of the Swift River, offering hikers several easily-accessible routes to explore. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the trails are just minutes from many Albany homes for sale.

Square Ledge & Lost Pond Trail - Gorham, NH

Address: 361 NH-16, Gorham, NH 03581

A moderately easy hike with outstanding views, the Square Ledge & Lost Pond Trail begins at the trailhead across the highway from the Visitor Center at Pinkham's Notch, not far from these Jackson homes for sale. A 1.4-mile out-and-back hike will take you to a gorgeous view of Mt. Washington from the summit of Square Ledge. It's short but occasionally steep, gaining about 350 feet in elevation. If you're interested in extending your hike, a side trail leads to the beautiful Lost Pond, adding several additional miles.
