How to Decorate for the Holiday Season While Your House is on the Market | Badger Peabody & Smith RealtyWhen you're selling your home and a holiday approaches, you might wonder if it's worth it to decorate. After all, if everyone else on the street has their string lights up and wreaths on the door, you might stand out or seem boring in comparison.

Decorating for the seasons and the holidays can connect people and draw them in. But striking a fine balance is important.

Here are some tips to help you make decisions with your seasonal decorating while your house is on the market.

Remain inclusive and neutral: Since not everyone celebrates the same holidays at different times of year, it is important to keep decorations more directed toward the season rather than the holiday or celebration.

Fortunately, focusing on the season and its common nature landscapes can help your decor seem timely. Ideas: winter wonderland, pine forest, or starlight night.

Just like when decorating the interior of your home in general as you prepare to sell, less is always more. Too much clutter or overly personal items like family photos or monogrammed stockings can get in the way of potential clients imagining their own lives in your home.

Decorating for the seasons allows you to add a sense of charm in subtle ways, connecting the viewers to the time and place, but without overwhelm or distracting from the home's features. Some ideas include copper candlebras, tiny fairy lights, or velvet bows.

Too much could potentially distract the viewers from noticing the home's best features, so it's important to select one general theme that is sophisticated and woven throughout any decorations. A color scheme is an easy way to pull this off. But you can also consider patterns or textiles as part of the aesthetic theme.

During the fall and winter, think earth tones, burgundy, gold, and silver. You can opt for tartans, metallics, or velvets as a theme texture. Meanwhile, during the spring, you might prefer brighter colors or pastels.

Even if you live on the kind of street that goes all out with holiday decor, keeping it classic and simple will be best if your home is on the market. A seasonal, neutral wreath on the front door can make the home seem elevated and timely without distraction.

Adding some simple ribbon bows to railings and subtle white lights on greenery or around the windows lends just enough charm and warmth that will appeal to the most potential buyers, without risking overwhelm or disconnection.

Of course, you wouldn't want to overwhelm your visitors, but setting the tone with a scented candle or diffuser that represents your chosen theme or season can enrich the viewing experience. It can help you root your potential buyer in warm memories they associate with those fragrances.

During the season, you may want to consider a pumpkin spice, cinnamon or apple pie scent. As you approach December and January, you could switch over to balsam fir, pine, or gingerbread. In the colder part of the year, add decorative items that are cozy, like a velvet throw or a fuzzy set of cushions.

As you can see, there are many ways to decorate for the season without deterring buyers. The main tips are to keep it simple, neutral, and in sophisticated, cohesive colors and patterns, while focusing on the season and nature. Include a textile or sensory detail that fits the theme, but don't distract away from the home's best selling points.
