Get your motor running and head out on the highway! Riding enthusiasts take advantage of the longest day of the year, June 21, to celebrate World Motorcycle Day. Feeling the itch to hit the open road? Check out these incredible rides through the White Mountains, as recommended by our real estate agents.
- Kancamagus Highway
Affectionately known as "the Kanc," picturesque Kancamagus Highway has been designated an American Scenic Byway. This 34.5-mile ride along Route 112, stretching from Lincoln to Conway, passes right through the heart of the White Mountains. At its peak, the Kanc reaches nearly 3,000 feet at Kancamagus Pass, making it the highest-altitude highway in the Northeast. Other sights include the Swift River, Sabbaday Falls, and Rocky Gorge. There are half a dozen campgrounds along the route if you want to spend some extended time hiking the wildlife-abundant trails. Be sure to see these Conway homes for sale and Lincoln homes for sale along the way.
- Mount Washington Auto Road
Spanning a relatively short 7.6 miles, Mount Washington Auto Road is an example of quality over quantity. As the highest peak in the Northeast and the most prominent mountain west of the Mississippi, Mount Washington provides unparalleled views, accessible from the scenic turnouts on the road. The steep 12 percent grade can be challenging, but once you reach the top (at a height of 6,145 feet), you can take time to enjoy the scenery and visit the gift shop. Keep in mind that the change in altitude can cause as much as a 60-degree fluctuation in temperature from bottom to top, so plan ahead. Fee for motorcycle and driver is $30. On June 21, hours are 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
- Pinkham Notch
Much of New Hampshire's topography was formed due to glacial movement during various Ice Ages. One of the more dramatic features is Pinkham Notch, created from erosion of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the most recent ice age, about 500 centuries ago. The Presidential, Wildcat, and Carter-Moriah ranges make up the three sides of a giant U-shaped valley. Development of Highway 16 has made the area easily accessible. A number of hiking trails, including a portion of the Appalachian Trail, wind through Pinkham Notch. Experienced hikers can try their hand at the Huntington Ravine Trail, widely considered the most difficult trail in the state. The Pinkham Notch road runs 19 miles close to theseĀ Gorham homes for sale in the north and to the south near these Jackson homes for sale.
