On October 12th,  Aaron Woods, Debbie James, Deb Engelhardt, Karen Walsh and myself, enjoyed a wonderful, educational boat tour around Squam Lake. As regular boat owners on Squam Lake, Aaron and I left with a better understanding of the Squam Lake watershed! We experienced the sighting of the only baby loon chick that hatched this summer on Squam Lake. We learned from the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center that this chick will leave Squam Lake for the Atlantic Ocean once the ice starts to form. Loon chicks will not return to their birth lake after they leave, but will return to a close local lake. Maybe we will see it on Winnipesaukee, Winnisquam, Waukewan or Winona Lakes in 2018. We were also lucky enough to spot a large Bald Eagle on the top of a tree watching for fish. Our learning continued as we came upon a group of loons consisting of 6! We quietly watched them dive and surface and then they would all talk to one another. These adult loons will also leave the area once the ice sets in to travel to the ocean. They will send out scouts from the ocean to Squam in the spring to report on open ice in their lake territory. The loons will return when the scout communicates that the ice is out in the spring. While learning many facts about the loon, we also learned more about the original hotels around the lake, the eagles (of course) and lastly about the change in the environment that is starting to cause a definite decline in the loon population and how the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center  is helping to fight that battle. If you've never had a tour of the lake…even if you live on it, we highly recommend it! Thank you to the Squam Lakes Science Center for having us, and for more information on their boat tours and their work, visit them at: www.nhnature.org
