This post was written by an agent in our Holderness office, Jerry Love.

jerry loveMost real estate agents will admit that on most days the work they do and much of the time they spend at their work goes completely unnoticed and largely unappreciated. Paydays can be few and far between, and the hours in front of a computer, or behind the wheel of a car, can seem very unrewarding: Then what is it that keeps agents doing what they do day after day, year after year? It's very simple really. It all about the people we meet and the places we go. Sounds like a Dr. Seuss book, doesn't it? Well, at times it can seem storybook, for sure…and here's a true story I want to share. Early in 2008, I was asked to list a boathouse for sale on Squam Lake. The owner, Ken, was an affable gentleman who found that having a home on Lake Winnipesaukee and a boathouse on Squam was not the most advantageous of scenarios. So he came to me and asked if I would put his boathouse on the market. Well, I gladly accepted, even though I knew that we were beginning to experience a downturn in the real estate market. For the next number of years, we struggled to find a buyer in what turned out to be some of the most difficult years in the economy.  The long and short of it was, I was unable to put a transaction together for Ken. I showed the boathouse a number of times, and marketed it around the world, but to no avail. Finally, Ken decided to take the boathouse off the market and wait until things got better, and as it turns out, our office did sell the boathouse in late 2015. Unfortunately, I was not graced to be a part of the sale, and that's where the "unrewarding" part of this profession came to be, but that's not the end of the story. A month ago I got a call from Ken. He wanted me to know how much he appreciated all the work and effort I put in to marketing and showing his property, and that he would like to compensate me for my efforts. I told him that I didn't expect to be compensated, but thanked him for his thoughtfulness. He asked if maybe I would accept a donation to a favorite charity or organization of my choosing. I told him that I would be honored to accept, and gave him the name of a Scouting group for boys called Royal Rangers, a group I had been involved in for a number of years as the District Director. A few days later, I got a note from the district office of Royal Rangers in Portland, Maine, indicating that they had received a generous check in the amount of $1,000 in my name. Surprised? I guess you could say that. Amazed?  Well that's even a better description of how I felt when I got the word. Delighted? Yes, you could say that too, but all in all, I guess I felt really blessed, blessed to know that, just when you think that the work you do may well have gone unnoticed, someone brings those efforts to the forefront in such a special way. So, if you'll excuse me, I've got a number of places to go, and a number of great people to meet…and by the way, I hope you're one of them! To learn more about Jerry, click here
