Backyard Garden in Easton NHMore Easton property owners are trying to live more sustainably and save time and money at the grocery store in the process. It's why many have turned to starting their own backyard garden -- so they can grow their own fruits and vegetables (and have fun doing it in the process) rather than purchase them from somewhere else. But starting a garden is more detailed than you might think. Here's a look at some do's and don'ts for starting one: DO's
  • Location: Make sure your garden is located in a spot that gets at least 6 hours of sun per day.
  • Soil: Have your soil tested and amend it if necessary to provide optimal growth conditions.
  • Fertilize the soil: But don't use the same stuff you use on your lawn -- try low organic fertilizers.
DON'Ts
  • Plant too close together: This causes overcrowding, plants fighting for water and nutrients and overall, plants that are unhealthy.
  • Water too much: Yes, you can water too much. It's best if you water seldom, but deep. Water once every two or three days and give the plants a good "drink."
  • Plant at the wrong time: Know the seasonal frost dates in your area and plant accordingly! Nothing destroys a potential crop yield like planting at the wrong time.
